Line of succession
It is 300 years ago today that the House of Hanover assumed the monarchy in the United Kingdom of Great Britain; that Ireland was to follow nearly ninety years later and yet still on their watch is testament to their longevity - a line that extended from 1714 to 1901, where the British assembled the largest empire in world history and enforced Pax Britannica after the defeat of Napoleon. Today it seems unremarkable to import a CEO for a top enterprise but with historical lens, The Guardian assumes that there could have been civil war between the Protestant Germans and supporters of the Catholic Stuart line, but I think the salutary experience of King William III, a Dutchman who ruled even after the death of his British wife, prepared the British establishment and the population at large for more relatively benign foreigners to rule over us, albeit in a circumscribed fashion. It was crucial in developing the constitutional monarchy we have today instead of following the path of France (or worse) Russia.
