Attack of the drones
It was important
that the United Nations General Assembly achieved what the Security Council,
condemning the Syrian regime for the near daily massacres it inflicts on its
own people. For more than 130 member
governments to vote in favour of the Arab League plan against a miserly twelve
who oppose it, heaps burning coals on the heads of the Russian and Chinese
governments. However, it should not be
used as moral sanction for overt military action. Before the vote took place, one person wrote
a letter to The Daily Telegraph advocating “send in the drones” in order to
eviscerate Bashar al-Assad’s command-and-control structure. Notwithstanding the legally grey area that
drones occupy, I don’t see how deploying Nick Clegg, Ed Miliband and Iain
Duncan Smith will bring Damascus to its knees, let alone making Assad cease and
desist.
